The Texas Technology Initiative calls for the development of a State Strategy on Advanced Technology (SSAT) establishing a 10-year plan for creating leading-edge R&D programs, world-class infrastructure, and interdisciplinary networking that drives the growth in Texas of knowledge-based industries that are the key to sustained prosperity in a global economy.

Innovations in advanced technologies are fundamental to the competitiveness across the state's six targeted industry clusters:

  • Advanced Technologies and Manufacturing
  • Aerospace and Defense
  • Biotechnology and Life Sciences
  • Energy
  • Information and Computer Technology
  • Petroleum Refining and Chemical Products
"It is at the intersection of microelectronics, photonics, and MEMS that some of the greatest challenges and opportunities for DOD [Department of Defense] arise. The model for this integration is the spectacular reduction in transistor circuit size under Moore's Law…. As successful as this progress has been, the future lies in increasing the level of integration among a variety of technologies to create still-more-complex capabilities."

—Dr. Tony Tether,
Director of DARPA

The SSAT will asses the needs of these industry clusters and provide direction on how to maximize the State's return on investment by fostering innovative research in advanced technologies in a way that stimulates the development of new industries.

This long-term strategy will require an unprecedented degree of collaboration across institutions, agencies, regions, and industries. The SSAT will provide a comprehensive guide for such collaboration based on the historic precedents of initiatives such as SEMATECH.
